Burai Fighter is probably a pretty good game, but it's just not my type of game, so I dont' have a whole to to say about it. Like most of the games I have written about, I have spent very little money on it, so unless it is super fucking bad, I'm not really inclined to hate on it. Burai Fighter is a side-scrolling shooter, like Gradius and a million other games, released in 1990 and developed by KID. My research (wikipedia) has shown that KID also developed the Pepsiman game for Playstation and some dating sims, and they went out of business a few years ago.
There are a few things that make Burai Fighter unique, or at least a bit atypical for the genre. For one, the game does not appear to be a port of some flashier arcade game, but is a console exclusive. When you start a game, you have the choice of three difficulty levels with names that do nothing to tell you what level of difficulty you might be getting yourself into. When you start playing you'll notice that unlike most other side-scrolling shooters, you can fire in 8 directions. This is made not completely horrible by allowing you to lock in the direction you are firing by holding down the fire button. It works out a lot better than other games, like those ports of arcade games originally played with rotary joysticks. Another distinction of this game is that you don't control a plane or spaceship, but a guy in a spacesuit.
The rest of the game seems standard. You fly around, you shoot stuff, you get power ups, and at the end of the level you shoot a boss until it dies. Graphically, the game is good for an NES game. The sprites, level design, and choice of color make it clear what is going on all the time. I guess it is possible that the game could fall apart and become a mess after the first level or two because I didn't play it that much, but it's probably alright. If you like this sort of game, I can't really come up with a reason to not give it a try.
